Sleepless Nights

This one was written during a sleepless night some years ago.

Sleepless Nights

Lying on my bed,

Ceiling staring at my open eyes,

Lost in the darkness of night,

My sad flutter of eyes,

Alas! No sleep, it’s a sleepless night.

Tears well up,

As sad thoughts sail through my mind,

Faint sounds of the night,

Seems so very loud in my ears, haunting me.

Why me?

Can’t I be left to sink into the deep ocean of sleep?

Worn out body, life so mundane,

Wish I could close my eyes,

And see blackness around me,

Until the morning sun shines down on me.

Hours pass by, not a wink of sleep do I get,

I get up from my bed,

And stand beside the window.

Staring at twinkling stars,

I remember my mother’s words,

“Stars twinkle at night,

To tell you that you are not alone,

If ever a day comes,

When I am not beside you,

Don’t worry my sweet child,

Close your eyes and think of me,

I shall pat you to sleep.

Though I will be far away from you,

Sleepless nights will bring me closer to you.

There is not a single day,

That I wouldn’t watch over you from the heavens.

Your sleepless nights are the nights I shall visit you,

To close your eyes until the light of dawn shines upon you.”
